Behind the Seams at Deeana’s Designs: A Little Patience. A Lot of Craftsmanship.

Deeana Richards is the self-taught upholsterer behind Deeana’s Designs in Asheville, North Carolina, where craftsmanship, curiosity, and a love of leather guide every project.

For Deeana, upholstery has always been about more than transforming furniture. It is about solving problems, preserving meaningful pieces, and creating something that will remain part of a family’s story for years to come.

As the owner and sole craftsperson, Deeana has built a business that reflects her independent spirit and hands-on approach to the craft. From custom cushions and commercial seating to treasured family heirlooms, each project receives her full attention, and quite often, a beautiful new life in leather.

Deeana’s stepmother introduced her to the fundamentals of sewing. Those early lessons took on new purpose when she began working with thrifted furniture. While talented teachers have helped her refine her craft over the years, much of her expertise has grown through hands-on experience, experimentation, and a willingness to figure things out.

Deeana’s Designs was established in 2013 and began on a small scale with draperies, Roman shades, and pillows. Before long, pillows led to cushions, cushions led to chairs, and more ambitious projects.

Today, approximately 80 percent of Deeana’s work involves leather. She serves both residential and commercial clients and has also developed a strong online business, creating replacement cushions for Morris chairs and custom seating for restaurants.

“I love working with leather,” Deeana says. “I love that it’s timeless and will last for years to come.”

Deeana’s Designs remains a one-woman shop, allowing her to stay personally involved in every detail of every project. That intentionally small setting is an important part of how Deeana works.

“It’s peaceful and just me and my two shop bunnies,” she says. “It’s perfect.” The greatest reward is seeing a customer’s expression when a finished project is revealed. The hardest part, she jokes, is the paperwork.

“Each project deserves my undivided time and attention to detail,” she says. “I will give their project the same love, time, and dedication as the project before, but I refuse to rush the process.”

For Deeana, choosing materials begins with asking the right questions. From pets and spills to sunlight and frequent use, she considers the realities of each space before recommending leather or fabric. That thoughtful guidance helps customers feel confident in their choices.

Deeana’s connection to Asheville took on even greater meaning after Hurricane Helene devastated western North Carolina in September 2024.

Her home and shop escaped with relatively minor damage, but the community surrounding them faced unimaginable loss. “It’s been an incredibly humbling experience,” she says. “Being in the community changed all of us. If anything, the experience has made me appreciate my neighbors more and love the mountain community. People really are their best in the worst of times.”

Deeana invites customers and fellow craftspeople to stay tuned for what’s next!
